Paul likes to use running a race as the illustration of our lives from now on till we go to eternal life. Only those who get to the finishing line can win the race. Unfortunately, there will be some, who, even though they start well and tell others about how to win the race of salvation, will not get to the finishing line themselves.

They are like signposts, pointing to the way but not leaving the spot where they have been erected if they do not personally accept Christ into their lives as Lord and Saviour.
