There are many bad things that people do in secret. They do not want others to see these things or hear about them, that is, "they are kept in the dark and not brought out into light". Christians are not to have anything to do with the things of darkness, for example, secret cults, gossiping, stealing et cetera. Paul's advice to the Ephesians and to us today is to live as children of light. He clearly stated how we can do this in the passage.
