You will remember that Zechariah became dumb after angel Gabriel spoke to him.  That is probably why the people did not ask him what the name of the child would be at first.  They were just going to name him Zechariah after his father, but Elizabeth said no, and said it will be John.  Since the tradition is that a child is given the name of someone in the family, they decided to ask the father.  Without knowing what Elizabeth had told them, he wrote down the same name, John. Imagine that; Elizabeth was not there when the angel told Zechariah to call his son John but the Holy Spirit told her!
